Tanya Hetherington's Journey: From Aspirations to AFLW Assistant Coach
A Childhood Love for Football
Tanya Hetherington's passion for football began at an early age, as she witnessed her father's umpiring adventures. Despite the limited opportunities for girls to play the game in the 1990s and early 2000s, she eagerly played whenever she could.
The Struggle for Inclusivity
As a girl, Hetherington encountered obstacles in pursuing her football aspirations. Club resistance and the absence of girls' teams hindered her path, but she persevered, joining the Surrey Park Panthers in 2007. However, the team was disbanded a year later, leading to her connection with Debbie Lee and a new opportunity at Diamond Creek.
A Coaching Revelation
Hetherington pursued a degree in Sport Coaching and Administration but faced limited visibility of women in coaching roles. Despite coaching opportunities in netball and football, nothing solidified until an ACL injury at a crucial moment in 2015.
The Sliding Door Moment
Hetherington's injury coincided with the announcement of the AFL's Victorian Academy, aiming to identify potential players for the inaugural AFLW draft. Selected for the Academy's rehabilitation program, she was encouraged by coach Graham Burgen to lead Diamond Creek through the 2016 season.
Taking Opportunities
Returning to the field in 2017, Hetherington showcased her talents, landing on the radar of Greater Western Sydney recruiter Chyloe Kurdas. A strong tryout led to a contract with the Giants, thanks partly to her coaching experience.
The Next Level
After six seasons and 46 games with the Giants, Hetherington received an offer from the AFL's national female talent manager, Jess Smith. She joined the AFL's talent pathways program, working alongside her childhood hero, Tarkyn Lockyer.
Destiny Calls
A chance encounter with Scott Gowans at an airport led Hetherington to the Sydney Swans. Initially considering coaching roles elsewhere, she was offered a position as senior assistant coach within the AFLW program. Eager to contribute to the "W," she relocated to Sydney and assumed the role of forward line coach.
Reaching the Dream
Hetherington's impact on the Swans' resurgence in 2023 is evident through the improved performance of the forward line. Her journey, marked by perseverance, seized opportunities, and a love for the game, culminated in a dream come true: a full-time assistant coaching role in the AFLW.
