Collingwood Double Blow: Star Players Ruled Out for Season

Tom Mitchell: Appendix Surgery and Ongoing Foot Injury

Star midfielder Tom Mitchell's season has come to an abrupt end due to a recent appendectomy and a lingering foot injury. Mitchell has been sidelined since being substituted out of the Anzac Day clash with a foot injury. Despite undergoing surgery in early June, further foot soreness forced Collingwood to reduce his workload.

Mitchell's 31-year-old plantar fascia issue has plagued him throughout the first seven rounds. After initial attempts to manage the injury with rest, the club opted for surgery to restore full foot function. Mitchell was initially hopeful of returning by round 19, but setbacks have forced Collingwood to rule him out for the remainder of the season.

Jordan De Goey: Hamstring Injury and Rehabilitation

Collingwood has also lost high-impact forward Jordan De Goey for an extended period. De Goey sustained a high-grade hamstring strain and tendon damage in Saturday night's narrow victory over Carlton. Scans on Sunday confirmed the club's worst fears, and De Goey is expected to require up to three months of recovery.

De Goey's injury is a significant setback for Collingwood, as he has played a crucial role in their resurgence under coach Craig McRae.

Collingwood's Playoff Hopes Impacted

With only three rounds remaining in the home and away season, the absence of Mitchell and De Goey deals a heavy blow to Collingwood's playoff aspirations. Mitchell finished fourth in last season's Copeland Trophy, highlighting his importance to the team.

Collingwood will now need to find replacements for these key players if they hope to maintain their position in the top eight and qualify for the AFL Finals Series.
