Collingwood skipper Brianna Davey faces a race against time to be fit for the AFLW season opener next week due to ankle reconstruction surgery. Despite undergoing surgery in the off-season, Davey remains hopeful of playing in Round 1.

"I'm tracking alright," Davey told AFL.com.au. "Hopefully, I'll get up for Round 1, but there's been a few little blips since the surgery. If not Round 1, then early in the season somewhere."

Injury History and Recovery Challenges

Davey is no stranger to injuries, having previously suffered two ACL reconstructions. However, she describes this ankle injury as "a little bit challenging" due to the ups and downs in her recovery.

"You've got a timeline with ACLs, so you know what's ahead of you," Davey explained. "With this ankle injury, it's been more like 'Oh you're back, oh nope, now you're not.' So it's been a bit more of a mental challenge."

Mid-Week Football and Injury Management

Collingwood will face a demanding mid-week footy period in the first month of the season, with a four-day break between games. Davey recognizes the importance of staying fresh and injury-free.

"It will be interesting to see how different teams handle it," said Davey. "I feel like in the AFLW, such a short season, trying to keep injury free and keep fresh is a big one."

Davey welcomes the introduction of Score Assist into the AFLW this season. The smart ball technology will allow for score reviews for the first time in the women's game.

"I think it will bring a new element to the game," Davey said. "It's just going to help the umpires make those close decisions, especially those close ones."

Season Opener Excitement

Collingwood will launch their season against Sydney on August 30th at North Sydney Oval. Davey is excited for the challenge and expects a strong crowd:

"It doesn't matter where you play, you bring a style of footy and come with intent," Davey said. "Sydney always has a really solid crowd. I know we'll get a pretty strong Magpie Army presence there."
