Bottle-Throwing Incident at AFL Match Leads to Lifetime Ban
Unacceptable Behavior
During the R24 match between Carlton and St Kilda at Marvel Stadium on August 25, 2024, a former Carlton member, Steven Piperno, was hit by an object thrown from the crowd. The incident resulted in a nasty cut to the head, requiring medical attention and forcing Piperno to leave the field.
Arrests and Charges
Victoria Police identified a 23-year-old Northcote man from the crowd as the suspect and arrested him. He was charged with:
- Recklessly causing injury
- Discharging a missile
- Unlawful assault
Lifetime Ban Imposed
The AFL responded swiftly to the incident, confirming that the suspect held a three-game Carlton membership in the past. As a result, he will now receive a lifetime ban from attending all AFL and AFLW matches. He will also be ineligible to purchase any type of AFL membership.

AFL General Counsel Stephen Meade stated that such behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. He emphasized that attending matches is a privilege that can be revoked for those who engage in violence.
