2024 NAB AFLW Season: Unveiling the Fixture
Season Kick-Off and Grand Finalists Clash
Sydney has secured the honor of hosting the 2024 NAB AFL Women's season opener on August 30 at North Sydney Oval. They will face arch-rivals Collingwood in a thrilling first night showdown, while West Coast, led by the iconic Daisy Pearce, will welcome Richmond to Mineral Resources Park. Additionally, last year's Grand Finalists, Brisbane and North Melbourne, will face off in week one.
Compressed Fixture with Enhanced Television Presence
This season will introduce a compressed fixture, with teams playing 11 home and away games over a 10-week period. This format, labeled by week rather than round for the first time, aims to enhance television viewership. Mid-week games will take place during the four-week compressed period, including matches held on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, targeting school holidays for increased fan engagement.
Travel Considerations and Break Equity
Non-Victorian clubs, including Port Adelaide, Fremantle, and Sydney, have been scheduled with back-to-back games in Victoria to mitigate travel pressures during the compressed period. However, Brisbane and Hawthorn will face a challenging short-break trip to WA. To ensure equity, all teams have been grouped with other clubs during the compressed period, allowing them to face opponents with similar breaks between games.
Indigenous Heritage and Pride Celebrations
Week nine will showcase Indigenous heritage with the inaugural AFLW Dreamtime match in the Northern Territory between Essendon and Richmond in Darwin. Hawthorn will also host Melbourne in Cairns, highlighting the league's commitment to Indigenous empowerment. Pride celebrations will take place in week seven, with St Kilda, GWS, Adelaide, and Melbourne participating in this special initiative.
Historical Landmarks and New Venues
Richmond will return to its Swinburne Centre home ground, where it played its home games in 2022. Sydney will make history by hosting a home game in Coffs Harbour for the first time. Furthermore, four state-based derbies are spread throughout the 10 weeks, ensuring regional rivalry and fan excitement.
